AceShowbiz - Matthew Perry's family has released a statement following the announcement of arrests in connection with his overdose death last fall. "We were and still are heartbroken by Matthew's death, but it has helped to know law enforcement has taken his case very seriously," they said. "We look forward to justice taking its course."
The arrests include Perry's personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, and Dr. Mark Chavez and Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who are facing charges of conspiracy to distribute ketamine. Also arrested were Perry's friend Erik Fleming and Jasveen Sangha, an alleged drug dealer known as the "Ketamine Queen of Los Angeles."
Perry's stepfather, Keith Morrison, host of "Dateline," identified Perry to authorities after his death and was listed as the informant on his death certificate. Morrison has spoken openly about his stepson's struggles with addiction, saying, "It's with you every day. It's with you all the time."
According to the coroner, the ketamine in Perry's system could not have come from his ketamine infusion therapy, as its half-life is only three to four hours and he had not had treatment in over a week. Dr. Plasencia, who worked at an urgent care center, is accused of providing Perry with additional ketamine despite knowing his history of drug abuse.
Morrison said he had thought Perry was making progress in his recovery. "He felt like he was beating it," Morrison said. "But you never beat it, and he knew that, too."
Perry's death at age 54 was attributed to the acute effects of ketamine, with drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine effects as contributing factors.
