AceShowbiz - Fans of the dark, gritty underworld of Marvel's "Spider-Man Noir" can rejoice as Sony Pictures confirms a live-action series coming to Amazon Prime Video. Nicolas Cage, who voiced the character in the animated hit "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse", will play an "aging and down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city's one and only superhero."
The series has already stirred excitement with the addition of Brendan Gleeson, best known for roles in "Harry Potter" and "The Banshees of Inisherin", cast in a villain role. Though there are no details yet on which specific villain Gleeson will portray, or if the character is an original creation, his involvement has added significant star power to the project.
According to Daniel Richtman, a reliable source for casting news, this addition could be confirmed by the trades soon. In the comics, "Spider-Man Noir" goes up against reimagined versions of classic foes like the Goblin, Vulture, Electro, and Doctor Octopus. This intriguing premise hints that Gleeson's role may be one of these iconic villains.
The show's creative team is equally impressive. Oren Uziel, known for "The Lost City" and "22 Jump Street", serves as writer and executive producer. He is joined by Steve Lightfoot from "Marvel's The Punisher", acting as co-showrunner. The acclaimed duo of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, along with Amy Pascal, will also serve as executive producers. Harry Bradbeer from "Killing Eve" will direct and executive produce the first two episodes.
Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, expressed her excitement, "We are absolutely thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character." Vernon Sanders, the head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, added, "The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero."
"Spider-Man Noir", part of the Marvel Noir universe, offers a unique take on the superhero mythos, setting the story during the Great Depression in a distinctly dark and atmospheric New York City. While the animated version provided moments of comic relief, this live-action adaptation is expected to delve into darker themes, reflecting the original tone of the comics.
As fans await more details, one thing is certain: this thrilling adaptation is poised to add a fresh and intriguing chapter to the "Spider-Man" saga.
