AceShowbiz - Oscar and Golden Globe-winning actor Brendan Gleeson ("The Banshees of Inisherin") has joined the cast of Amazon's live-action "Spider-Man Noir" series, Variety reports. Gleeson will play the show's villain, in a role that is currently being kept under wraps.

The series stars Nicolas Cage as a version of the black-clad private investigator he voiced in 2018's animated "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse". Lamorne Morris ("New Girl") co-stars as Robbie Robertson, a dedicated journalist who takes on risky stories in 1930s New York.

"Spider-Man Noir" is set in a gritty 1930s New York and follows an aging and down-on-his-luck private investigator who must confront his past as the city's only superhero. The series is based on the Marvel comic book series of the same name, which reimagined Spider-Man's classic villains as gangster types.

Gleeson's casting adds to his impressive resume, which includes critically acclaimed performances in films such as "Braveheart", "Gangs of New York" and the "Harry Potter" franchise. He has also starred in several successful television shows, including "Mr. Mercedes", "The Comey Rule" and "State of the Union".

"Spider-Man Noir" is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. The series was developed by Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, who will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal, the team behind "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse", are also executive producers. Harry Bradbeer will executive produce and direct the first two episodes.

The series is expected to premiere on MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video, but a release date has not yet been announced.
