The "My Church" hitmaker has sought divorce from Ryan Hurd - the father of her three-year-old son Hayes Andrew - on October 2 after five years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their separation, documents obtained by US Weekly revealed.
Filed in Tennessee, the documents list the separation date as the same day the petition was submitted. The former couple have a pre-nuptial agreement in place.
The news comes just a few weeks after Ryan praised Maren following her decision to step away from country music due to feeling "very, very distanced" from the industry and its politics. He wrote on Instagram last month, "She deserves to be celebrated, not just tolerated."
"I'm so sick of watching my wife get the s*** kicked out of her by the internet. I'm sick of every talking head having some kind of stupid opinion about what she says. It's the same every time, why are you surprised when she calls out something racist or homophobic, I'm sick of people getting rewarded for it."
"She deserves a little sunshine for the burden she has carried for every artist and fan that feels the same way. I can't wait for that first tour and to see all of the smiling and beautiful people who needed these songs and and also need HER. I can't wait to make music that follows the same path, whatever that is. Love you, MM. Keep on keepin' on (sic)."
The former couple first met in 2013 but didn't start dating until December 2015, and they got engaged in 2017, months before tying the knot in March 2018.
Maren previously reflected about the early days of their relationship to People magazine, "We had been friends for only a couple of years, but there was always this writing chemistry in the room, and eventually, the timing of it was undeniable. We had such a foundation built off writing so many songs over the years that we were like, 'Why are we avoiding this?' "
