A few days earlier, it's reported that the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' star was 'really excited' to appear at the award show and he's 'ready for his comeback.'

AceShowbiz - Johnny Depp makes his first major TV appearance at the 2022 MTV VMAs. Two months after winning his defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, the actor and musician appeared as Moonman on the special night.

On Sunday, August 28, the 59-year-old star could be seen floating in an astronaut outfit. His suit was made to emulate the famous VMA trophy that every winner takes home. The "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" actor, who sported a clean-shaven face, floated above the stage before host LL Cool J took the stage. "Hey, you know what? I needed the work," he said before a narrator announced the host to the stage.

Depp's likeness appeared again in the astronaut suit after the following commercial break, before Marshmello x Khalid's performance. "Hey VMAs, let's get back to the f**king music, shall we?" he quipped before disappearing again.

A few days earlier, a source close to Depp claimed that the "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" star would make a surprise appearance at the event. It's also said that he was "really excited" for his brief appearance and that he's "ready for his comeback."

Depp has won 5 MTV Movie Awards in his career, including Best Villain, Global Superstar, Best Male Performance and 2012's Generation Award. At the 2012 award show, he also played guitar with the Black Keys during their performance of "Gold on the Ceiling".

Depp's TV comeback came two months after he came out legally victorious in the defamation case involving Heard. Following his major legal win, he went on tour with Jeff Beck throughout Europe. He also announced a forthcoming tour with Joe Perry, Alice Cooper and Tommy Henriksen, who make up rock supergroup the Hollywood Vampires.

His appearance is one of many planned happenings during the VMAs. BLACKPINK, J Balvin, Lizzo and Panic At the Disco will all perform, as will co-host Nicki Minaj, who will be honored with the video vanguard award.
