In less than a month after its release in theaters, the Brie Larson-starring superhero movie gives Marvel Studios its seventh film that has successfully cracked the billion dollar mark.

AceShowbiz - "Captain Marvel" has flown past the $1 billion barrier at the global box office, less than a month after its release.

The blockbuster, starring Brie Larson as the titular superhero, debuted at the top of the box office charts around the world following its first weekend in theatres in early March, banking a whopping $153 million (£116.2 million) from North American audiences, and an additional $456 million (£464.5 million) internationally.

Now it's become the first film of 2019 to cross the major milestone.

"Captain Marvel" powered her way into the record books on Wednesday, April 03, after grossing $358.1 million (£272 million) in North America, and another $644.5 million (£489.7 million) overseas to date, helping the movie crack the billion dollar mark.

It's only the seventh Marvel Studios film to achieve the feat, and the 38th overall in cinema history.

However, unlike other Marvel projects which have made box office history, "Captain Marvel" is the first of the comic book franchise to do so with a lead character which hadn't been introduced to audiences in a previous release.

Larson's "Captain Marvel" is currently poised to return to the big screen in the hugely anticipated "Avengers: Endgame", which opens on 26 April.

That all-star film is likely to smash even more records in its opening weekend, as fans have already rushed to secure their seats for the crossover superhero epic.

First-day records for advance ticket sales were broken on Tuesday, when they were made available online, even causing websites and apps for major ticket retailers like America's AMC Theatres and Alamo Drafthouse chains to crash.

"Avengers: Endgame", which will also star Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Hemsworth, among many others, is easily expected to top the $640.5 million (£486.6 million) global debut of "Avengers: Infinity War" last year (18), which made it the highest-grossing opening weekend in Hollywood history.
