'Green Book' beats out award-season favorite 'Roma' for the coveted prize, while Colman defeats Lady GaGa and her 'idol' Glenn Close for her first Academy Award.

AceShowbiz - The 91st Academy Awards was officially wrapped up with the Best Picture announcement. The top prize surprisingly went to "Green Book", defeating clear favorite "Roma" which led the nominations with nine.
To say it a surprise win is perhaps an understatement as the movie drew some criticism for its perceived historical inaccuracies. Seemingly defending the film, producer Jim Burke said in his speech, "We made this film with love and with tenderness and with respect."
Director Peter Farrelly added, "The whole story is about love, and about loving our differences, , and finding out the truth about who we are. We're the same people." The filmmaker, who earlier won Best Original Screenplay for the film, once again credited lead actor Viggo Mortensen as well as Mahershala Ali for the prize.

Mortensen lost out the best actor gong to Rami Malek, while Ali nabbed the Best Actor in a Supporting Role, bringing "Green Book" total win to three. It was Ali's second Oscar, making him the first black actor and Muslim to win the best supporting actor twice.
For Malek who won the Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody", it marks his first Oscar win. The musical film nabbed a total of four awards that night, the other three of which were for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
Olivia Colman was another first winner at the Sunday night, February 24 ceremony. The actress, who won BAFTA Award and Golden Globe Award earlier this year for her role as Queen Anne in "The Favourite", won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the same role.
Looking flabbergasted, the British actress began her acceptance speech, "This is hilarious. I got an Oscar." Calling her fellow nominees "extraordinary women," she singled out her "idol" Glenn Close as saying, "You've been my idol for so long, and this is not how I wanted it to be. I think you're amazing. I love you very much."
She went on using her speech to encourage aspiring actresses to pursue their dreams, adding, "Any little girl who's practicing their speech on the telly... you never know!"

Alfonso Cuaron was named Best Director for "Roma". It was his second Oscar in the category after winning the same prize for "Gravity" (2013). Cuaron also took the stage to accept Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Language Film awards earlier that night. "Being up here doesn't get old," he said while collecting the third prize for the Spanish-language film. "I want to thank the Academy for recognizing a movie about an indigenous woman."

"Black Panther" was another multiple winner at the ceremony, taking home Best Original Score, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. Regina King was dubbed Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in "If Beale Street Could Talk", while Lady GaGa won her first Oscar for Best Original Song for "Shallow" from "A Star Is Born".
"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" won Best Animated Feature Film. "First Man" and "Vice (2018)" also took home one each, for Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup and Hairstyling respectively.
