New 'Gotham' Photo Sparks Speculation That Barbara Is Harley Quinn

The color choices and lighting in the picture give unmistakably hues of the modern Harley Quinn, making fans assume that Barbara is poised to be the iconic DC character.
"Gotham" season 3 has unveiled a new photo for the upcoming episode titled "Heroes Rise: The Primal Riddle". The new photo features an exciting depiction of Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) which fans assume to be hinting at her future transformation as Harley Quinn.

The image sees Barbara in a red fur coat and dress. However, the color choices and lighting in the shot interestingly give unmistakably hues of the modern Harley Quinn. The light casts across Barbara's face, making it a pale bluish-white hue similar to the iconic DC villain-turned-hero's skin tone.

The lighting also gives Barbara's fur coat a myriad of bluish-white highlights. The overall effects of the lights make Barbara bear a strong resemblance to Harley Quinn's iconic red-and-blue outfit. Harley is known for having a variety of looks in the comics. In her classic look, they are red and black, while the black has been shifted to blue in recent years, including the one displayed in "Suicide Squad".

Nothing has been confirmed, but the producer of "Gotham" recently addressed Harley Quinn's debut on the series. Although he refused to directly reveal whether or not Barbara was poised to be Harley Quinn, he opened up, "All I can tell you is, the great thing, the joy of working with Erin is the range." He added, "The reason we changed her character, [is] because we knew what she could do. We're like, 'We can't keep you in one place. You've got to keep evolving.' So she's going to evolve again. That's all I can tell you."

Barbara debuted on FOX's Batman prequel as the fiancee of Detective Jim Gordon (Benjamin McKenzie). After staying in Arkham Asylum, she has grown into a powerful villain in season 3. Returning with a vengeance, Barbara serves as co-leader of a crime syndicate.

Starring David Mazouz, Camren Bicondova, Donal Logue, Robin Lord Taylor, Morena Baccarin and Jada Pinkett Smith, "Gotham" airs on Mondays at 8 P.M. ET on FOX.
