Geno McDermott's Blackfin reportedly is developing a documentary TV series centering on Aaron Hernandez, a former NFL star who killed himself in prison after being charged of a murder. The untitled Aaron Hernandez documentary TV series has been in production since earlier this year, Deadline reports.
"The Hernandez case has been a compelling investigation, but as a result of this horrific turn of events, the focus of the project will experience an obvious shift," said CEO of Blackfin McDermott.
Dan Wetzel has been tapped to provide the script for the series, which is set to cover Hernandez's story for the past four years. The docu-series tackles the most recent murder trial, in which Hernandez was acquitted on a double homicide five days before his own suicide. The series is targeted to explore the former NFL star's past as well as the truth behind the perceived double life he had.
The site states that the upcoming series will be made in the vein of Netflix's "Making a Murderer". Blackfin is set to put the series available on the market for streaming services, cable and premium networks next week.
As for Dan Wetzel, he is not a stranger to NFL. He is a bestselling author and the national columnist for Yahoo.com and Yahoo Sports, where he focuses on the NFL, NBA and college football. He has covered numerous high-profile sports trial including Jerry Sandusky and Michael Vick as he serves as an investigative reporter for the site.
McDermott and Wetzel are set to executive produce the Hernandez docu-series alongside Christina Douglas.
