Will 'Riverdale' Season 2 Feature Zombie?

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa says in an interview that the series is going to be more supernatural in the upcoming season, suggesting that fan theory about zombie may be true.

Is "Riverdale" season 2 pulling off "The Walking Dead"? In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa fuels a fan theory which says zombie will be featured on the series.

"There's a chance that happens," Aguirre-Sacasa says, when asked about bringing up the story of 2013's comics "Afterlife with Archie" to the series. "Afterlife with Archie" features Sabrina the Teenage Witch starting a zombie outbrake in the town.

Aguirre-Sacasa also admits that he has been intentionally putting hints throughout season 1. The hints refer to Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines) who travels to the Greendale side of the river which is the hometown of Sabrina. Jason is later found with a gunshot wound in the head.

Other easter eggs include Jason's sister Cheryl's (Madelaine Petsch) vision of an undead Jason and a winking reference to the "dark pagan gods." In "Afterlife", the dark pagan gods bring the zombie apocalypse that overtook Riverdale.

Should the theory be true, fans are assuming that Sabrina will make her first appearance in the season 1 finale, since the showrunner reveals that the finale will introduce "a character from the Archie mythology that has a darker origin and backstory." KJ Apa, the actor who plays Archie, previously also said that the witch was going to show up in the finale.

Aguirre-Sacasa further teases, "There definitely will be a big genre element to Season 2." He continues, "It won't suddenly just be a coming-of-age drama. There will definitely be a very strong, bold genre statement."

In addition, Aguirre-Sacasa reveals that an "Afterlife" take was among the pitches when he first developed the series though it didn't make the cut. He says, "Ultimately we ended up starting with a more grounded, less supernatural version because we thought we could always go there, but if we started there, it would be hard to take that away."

Starring Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes and Cole Sprouse, "Riverdale" season 1 airs Thursdays at 9 P.M. on The CW.
