"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" won't hit theater until 2017, but fans already get a glimpse of what kind of villain Marvel's space heroes will fight against in the upcoming film. Director James Gunn has shared on Twitter a new concept art from the second installment of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" film series, offering a first look at a new alien monster.

In the artwork originally published by Empire magazine, the monstrous creature can be seen being surrounded by the galactic superheroes which include Chris Pratt's Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana's Gamora, Dave Bautista's Drax, Vin Diesel' baby Groot and Bradley Cooper's Rocket. However, baby Groot doesn't seem to be battling the villain as seriously as the rest of the gang.

Little is known about the monstrous creature, which Gunn said is an Abilisk. Meanwhile, the helmer took to Facebook to address the strange expression of the young Groot drawn in the concept art by Andy Park. "He's having a good time," he wrote. "Baby Groot can be a little oblivious."

In addition to the core cast of the Guardians, Michael Rooker and Karen Gillan will reprise their roles from the first installment of the film as blue-skinned Ravager Yondu and Gamora's sister Nebula respectively. Other cast members include Pom Klementieff, Kurt Russell, Tommy Flanagan and Sylvester Stallone.

The second "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie is scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters on May 5, 2017. Set to the backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" continues the team's adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill's true parentage.
