"Suicide Squad" suffers major box office drop. After scoring the biggest August debut weekend with $133.7 million, the DC movie drops 67.4|percent| to $43.5 million in its second weekend, collecting a current total domestic cume of $222.6 million.
The Will Smith and Margot Robbie-starrer manages to stay on top at the North American box office after nearly defeated by newcomer "Sausage Party" which earned $13.5 million from 3.103 theaters on Friday, August 12. The R-rated animated comedy debuts at No.2 with $34.3 million.
"Suicide Squad" has earned more than $465 million globally and should be considered a success despite the scathing reviews and diminishing returns. "It may not be an emotional hit with critics and some of the fans, but it's certainly a box office hit," says comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
Jeff Bock, senior box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, agrees. "What Warner Bros. and DC did was give audiences something that obviously they really wanted to see. This is a band of outsiders rolling up one of the top 20 debuts of all time. This is a big thing still, no matter how it breaks down," he says.
As for the animation featuring the voices of Seth Rogen and Kristen Wiig, it got a B in Cinemascore and an 82|percent| approval rating on RottenTomatoes. Dergarabedian says, "Early on, everybody was marginalizing this movie because it looks like this frivolous ... concept, but audiences love original content if it's packaged the right way and if it's truly funny."
Placing third is another newcomer "Pete's Dragon" starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Oakes Fegley. Though it got an A in Cinemascore and an 85|percent| on RottenTomatoes, the Disney family remake struggles at the box office and only collected $21.5 million in its first week. "That's a head-scratcher," Deregarabedian says. "It would seem in the midst of all this edgy material that 'Pete's Dragon' would be a sanctuary for families."
Rounding out the top five are "Jason Bourne" and "Bad Moms". The Matt Damon-starrer and the R-rated comedy drop two slots to the fourth and fifth places with $13.8 million and $11.4 million respectively.
