'The Hurt Locker' director will team up with screenwriter Mark Boal for 'a crime drama set against the backdrop of Detroit's devastating riots that took place over five haunting summer days in 1967.'

AceShowbiz - Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, who previously worked together on "The Hurt Locker" and "Zero Dark Thirty", will reteam for an original true-crime drama set in Detroit. The two will also produce the untitled Detroit project, which will be financed by Annapurna Pictures, along with Megan Ellison and Matthew Budman.

The movie is described as "a crime drama set against the backdrop of Detroit's devastating riots that took place over five haunting summer days in 1967." Based on an original script written by Boal, the film is set to commence principal photography this summer with a plan to start casting in the next couple of months.

According to the film's press release, "Boal has been researching and working on the project, which explores systemic racism in urban Detroit, for more than a year." This will mark Boal's first movie that takes place in a domestic location.

The movie is due to be released sometime in 2017, the 50th anniversary of the Detroit riots, which killed 43 people, injured thousands and burnt more than 7000 buildings. There is no studio attached just yet.

Bigelow and Boal's "The Hurt Locker" helped them win Oscars in 2010. Bigelow became the first female director to win Best Achievement in Directing while Boal won Best Writing, Original Screenplay.
