The music mogul says he and the group 'had five fantastic years' and he's sure the boys will be fine even if they decide not to reform after the break.

Simon Cowell totally understands why One Direction wants to take a lengthy hiatus. The music mogul, who manages the group, said in a new interview with Daily Mail's Event magazine that the boys had worked non-stop for five years straight and they're getting the break they deserved.

"The way I look at it with One Direction is that we've had five fantastic years and they're totally exhausted," Cowell said. He added that he didn't know if the group would reform after the break. However, he's sure they'd be okay even if they wouldn't work together as a band again, saying, "They need time out, but they will all be fine and if they want to come back, they will. If not, they're all going to be OK."

Cowell went on revealing how close he was to the One Direction boys. He said their relationship's more than just business. "They actually came out of their contract with me two years ago. They got offers for way more money from other record companies," he shared. "Everyone jumped in. They could have really turned the screw on me if they'd wanted to but they didn't waver for a second, they stuck with me because we have a relationship."

In the interview, Cowell also discussed a little bit about Zayn Malik's departure from the band. He said he knew the "unhappy" young star was about to leave his bandmates even before he made the announcement.

"I knew Zayn was going before it happened. He was unhappy," he explained. "My concern was actually for the boys. Zayn wasn't in a great place but it was his decision to leave, he wasn't kicked out. He wanted to distance himself. My responsibility was to the boys because they had no warning."

One Direction has just released their fifth studio album, "Made in the A.M.". They will start their hiatus next year. Meanwhile, Malik has been working on his solo music after exiting the band in March.
