Jerry Casale says the wedding cake that resembled the World Trade Center was just a surprise brought by a friend to their reception.

AceShowbiz - Jerry Casale, the founding member of rock band Devo, clarified his 9/11-themed wedding which sparked outrage on the internet. "Deep apologies for all offended. There is a real explanation and its not what you think. Surprise cake and pix to TMZ was a set up. TBC...," he tweeted.

Casale, 67, and his bride Krista Napp, 26, got married on the 14th anniversary of the World Trade Center tragedy. In pictures obtained by TMZ, the couple had a wedding cake that looked like the twin towers with their faces. They also had box cutters handed to guests as parting gifts.

To Billboard, Casale explained that a friend brought the cake to their reception as a surprise after he joked that he and his wife were "like the twin towers of love." Of why they chose to get married on September 11, the musician claimed it was only because their marriage application was about to expire.

Casale accepted the cake without a fuss because "you don't want to ruin the whole night by overreacting," so he reasoned. "He thought it was some sort of transgressive sick humor, and the problem is, it's not funny," he said of his friend. "That's bad taste but who would have thought that somebody goes and sells shots to TMZ?"

Back in 2005, Gerald Vincent "Jerry" Casale formed a side project called Jihad Jerry & the Evildoers and released an album called "Mine Is Not a Holy War". He came under fire for that. "I thought they'd all think it it was really funny and get off on it, but people are really offended and scared," he said back then.
