MTV VMAs 2015: Rebel Wilson Criticized After Making Light of Police Brutality
Celebrity

Twitter users call out the Australian stand-up comedian after she made light of police brutality by opting to joke about police strippers at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards.

AceShowbiz - Rebel Wilson is slammed by Twitter users for joking about police injustice before she introduced the Best Hip-Hop Video at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards. The "Pitch Perfect" actress opted to joke about police strippers instead of addressing recent issues of police brutality.

"I know a lot of people have problems with the police," Wilson said, suggesting that she was going to say something about recent controversial police-involved killings. Unexpectedly, the Australian stand-up comedian who was dressed in police costume said, "but I really hate police strippers." She then took off her costume to reveal a bodysuit which read, "F**k Tha Police Stripper."

"They come to your house. You think you're getting arrested, and you just get a lap dance and it's usually uninspired," the 35-year-old comedian said, before joking about getting a police stripper for her grandmother's birthday. "I hired a police stripper for my grandma's 80th and he wouldn't even feel her up... I hate this injustice, hence the shirt."

Civil rights activist DeRay Mckesson was clearly unhappy with Wilson's joke onstage. "@RebelWilson/@MTV, police violence isn't a joke, as the deaths of #TamirRice, #RekiaBoyd, #FreddieGray, #MikeBrown, & #MyaHall remind us," he tweeted. "Rebel Wilson's 'stripper police' was a mockery of the past year and the lives of those killed by the police."

Another user @SowmyaK wrote, "Rebel Wilson is trying to make light of police brutality before the hip-hop video. GO AWAY." User @DPD_ threw shades at the comedian as saying, "I've kind of always thought Rebel Wilson 'doesn't really get it,' and I'm finally vindicated."

Similarly, user @DerrickClifton said, "Rebel Wilson's got her nerve presenting Best Hip-Hop Video while making a joke out of police/state violence. But I digress." Another user @MrPooni said, "Rebel Wilson making light of police brutality before announcing the nominees for best Hip Hop video is so white it hurts."
