Kurt Sutter is returning to FX after "Sons of Anarchy" came to an end. The network has picked up his new show "The Bastard Executioner" to series with 10 episodes in order. Set in the late Middle Ages, the series is scheduled to debut this fall.

The story centers on a knight (Lee Jones) serving King Edward I. Broken down by war, he vows to hang up his sword but gets pulled back into the violent world. Sutter will star on the series alongside his wife Katey Sagal, "True Blood" actor Stephen Moyer, and "The Americans" star Matthew Rhys.

"I love history. I love theology. I love blood. It's been very satisfying weaving fact and fiction to create a new mythology that combines all these elements," Sutter said in a statement. "And with this extraordinary cast -- Stephen Moyer, Katey Sagal and newcomer Lee Jones -- this world explodes on screen."

He added, "I love working with FX and [producer Fox 21 Television Studios]. They've been my family for 15 years. They not only tolerate me, they embrace my extremely disturbing storytelling sensibilities."

The pilot has been filmed with "Sons of Anarchy" director and executive producer Paris Barclay behind the lens. He will continue to get involved on the series as an executive producer along with Sutter and "Empire" EPs Brian Grazer & Francie Calfo. Production will resume this summer in Wales.
