The latest episode of "Scandal" was very powerful and emotional, and it affected not only its viewers, but also the show's stars. Lead actress Kerry Washington admitted she was brought to tears after watching the Ferguson-inspired episode.
The Olivia Pope depicter tweeted on Thursday, March 5, "This episode takes my breath away #scandal." Reacting to a scene in which Clarence (guest star Courtney B. Vance) broke down in tears on the shoulder of President Grant (Tony Goldwyn), she wrote, "This scene in the oval... WHAT?!?! My heart is exploding with gratitude AND grief."
The Emmy-nominated actress also retweeted Shonda Rhimes' tweet which read, "The last image does me in. Because he's just somebody's baby. That's all. He's someone's child. #BlackLivesMatter #Scandal." She added later, "Damn it @shondarhimes - I made it through the West Coast airing without crying... until I read that tweet."
Bellamy Young who plays First Lady Mellie Grant posted on her own Twitter, "Oh @CourtneyBVance such BEAUTIFUL work! Between your talent & the aching truth of this ep, I've been sobbing for 39 minutes straight." Vance himself said he's "honored&Blessed to join @ScandalABC tonite."
Goldwyn revealed there was "dead silence for about a minute" after the cast did the first table read of "The Lawn Chair". Scott Foley who plays Olivia's boyfriend Jake Ballard chimed in, "The balls that is this episode of #scandal...from pitch to production...#huge," as Guillermo Diaz who plays Huck and Katie Lowes who plays gladiator Quinn Perkins said they're "proud" to be part of the episode.
"The Lawn Chair" which aired on Thursday night followed Olivia as she's called to help the police calm down black residents in southeast D.C. after a young black male was killed by a white officer. The boy's father demanded to meet the police officer who killed his son and didn't let the coronor take the boy's body from the street.
As Olivia struggled to find out the truth, it's revealed that the cop lied about the boy pulling a knife, which he claimed as his reason to shoot the boy. The boy, Brandon, was merely reaching for his receipt for the cell phone he'd just bought to prove he hadn't stolen it.
