Ridley Scott Responds to 'Exodus: Gods and Kings' Whitewashing Backlash
Movie

The 'Prometheus' director hints that it's easier to get a financier with white actors being cast in the Moses movie.

Ridley Scott addresses controversy surrounding the casting of white actors for the principle characters in his Egyptian movie "Exodus: Gods and Kings". The director suggests that whitewashing was the only way to get the fund he needed to make the movie.

"I can't mount a film of this budget, where I have to rely on tax rebates in Spain, and say that my lead actor is Mohammad so-and-so from such-and-such," he explained to Variety. "I'm just not going to get it financed. So the question doesn't even come up."

The film is due December 12 in North America. Christian Bale plays Moses, while Joel Edgerton portrays Pharaoh Ramses II. The other stars include John Turturro, Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver, and Ben Kingsley. It follows Moses on his monumental journey of leading thousands of slaves to flee Egypt.
