Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to M. Night Shyamalan's next film "The Visit". The project marks the "Sixth Sense" helmer's return to sci-fi, a genre that made him Hollywood popular in the first place.
"The Visit" centers on a brother and sister sent for a week to their grandparents' remote Pennsylvania farm. The siblings later discover that the grandparents are involved something deeply disturbing, slimming down theirs chances of ever returning home.
Shyamalan took the triple duty of writing, directing and producing. Horror master Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions is also producing. Steven Schneider and Ashwin Rajan are executive producing.
The film is set for release on September 11, 2015. On the date, it will go against Open Road Films' action drama "Triple Nine" which is starring Casey Affleck and Chiwetel Ejiofor among others.
Shyamalan had success with his early films such as "Signs" and "Unbreakable" before going for big-budget blockbusters like "The Last Airbender" and "After Earth".
