Comedy Central apparently almost lost another of its hosts besides Stephen Colbert who will move to CBS next year. Jon Stewart was approached by NBC to replace David Gregory as "Meet the Press" host, three sources with knowledge of the talks tell New York Magazine.

According to one of the sources, NBC was prepared to offer Stewart virtually "anything" to lure him into accepting the job. "They were ready to back the Brink's truck up," the source says.

Stewart eventually turned down the offer and Chuck Todd was named the new "Meet the Press" host in August, succeeding Gregory who had hosted the show since 2008. NBC News and Stewart's agent, James Dixon, have not commented on the news.

Stewart has been hosting "The Daily Show" since 1999. He took an extended hiatus last summer to direct his first movie "Rosewater". On Tuesday, October 7, he took a sick leave, so correspondent Jason Jones filled in for him.
