Matt Damon Courted to Lead Zhang Yimou's 'The Great Wall'
Movie

Although he has very tight schedule, Damon would like to work with the Chinese director and is trying to make it happen.

Matt Damon is reportedly circling the lead role of Legendary Picture's "The Great Wall". Chinese director Zhang Yimou ("Hero", "The Flowers of War") has signed on to direct.

It has been a passion project for Legendary's Thomas Tull for years now. It was looking to film last year with Ed Zwick on board as helmer, and Henry Cavill and Benjamin Walker as the lead cast. But things did not move forward then.

Damon himself is a busy man. It was recently revealed that Damon would relive the "Bourne" franchise with director Paul Greengrass. However, he has admiration for Yimou and almost nabbed the role played by Christian Bale in "The Flowers of War". Deadline reported that "everybody is trying" to make this work.

"The Great Wall" is the revelation of mystery behind why the Great Wall was built, and the secrets hidden beneath its stones. Set in 15th century China, it follows British warriors who happen upon the hurried construction of the massive wall. As night falls, the warriors realize that the haste in building the wall isn't just to keep out the Mongols - there is something inhuman and more dangerous.

Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro wrote the script but Tony Gilroy wrote the most recent draft.
