Numerous 911 calls from Katie Couric's home were caused by crossed wires, instead of prank. According to New York Daily News, a NYPD police officer said, "She was not the victim of any sort of scam." A source added, "There was old wiring that literally would get crossed and send out a series of tones." Sometimes the phone would dial the emergency number.

Previously, the police suspected that Couric became victim of "spoof." Spoof is a process in which a prankster accesses mailbox that is not password-protected to make phone calls that look like they are from the victim's number.

Couric's phone has been dialing 911 automatically at a certain schedule. She said in February, "It's happened like three times the last three weeks. Every day, every time at 2 A.M. on Tuesday morning. I was out of town the last time it happened and apparently it happened before when nobody was home."

Couric was at home at the last call and she was awaken because the dispatcher called her back. The journalist later contacted Police Commissioner Ray Kelly for help. "So I called Ray Kelly, who I know just through the years seeing at different things. 'Ray, this is so weird but can you help me? I just don't know what to do,' " she told the audience of her show "Katie".
