Behind the scenes of the popular daytime drama "The Sun Also Sets," the real drama is far more outrageous than anything written for the cameras. Celeste Talbert, played by Sally Field, is the beloved queen of the soap, but her reign is threatened by the scheming actress Montana Moorehead (Cathy Moriarty), who will stop at nothing to steal the spotlight. When Montana conspires with the show's smarmy producer, David Seton Barnes (Robert Downey Jr.), to bring back Celeste's treacherous ex-lover and former co-star, Jeffrey Anderson (Kevin Kline), chaos erupts on and off the set. As old wounds reopen and new romantic entanglements form, including with a naive young actress (Elisabeth Shue), the line between scripted fiction and messy reality hilariously blurs. Directed by Michael Hoffman, this sharp and farcical comedy delivers a deliciously over-the-top look at the egos, alliances, and absurdities of television, where every plot twist is upstaged by the actors' own desperate bids for fame, revenge, and a good close-up.
