Peggy Lipton, born Margaret Ann Lipton on August 30, 1946 in New York City, was a defining figure of late 1960s and 1970s television, best remembered for her groundbreaking role as the idealistic flower child Julie Barnes on the crime drama The Mod Squad. Before finding fame, Lipton began her career as a model, appearing in numerous magazines and television commercials. Her striking looks and natural charisma quickly drew the attention of casting directors, leading to guest roles on popular television shows of the era, including Bewitched, The Virginian, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. These early appearances showcased her versatility and set the stage for her breakout role.

In 1968, Lipton was cast as Julie Barnes, one of three young undercover police officers in The Mod Squad, a series that became a cultural touchstone for its portrayal of counterculture youth working within the establishment. Her performance as the sensitive, compassionate Barnes resonated deeply with audiences, earning her four Primetime Emmy Award nominations and four Golden Globe Award nominations. In 1970, she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama, solidifying her status as a television icon. The show ran for five seasons until 1973, and Lipton’s character became a symbol of the changing social landscape of the time.

Following the conclusion of The Mod Squad, Lipton stepped away from the spotlight to focus on her family. In 1974, she married the legendary music producer and composer Quincy Jones, and together they had two daughters, Kidada Jones and Rashida Jones. Lipton took a 15-year hiatus from acting to raise her children, a period she later described as both fulfilling and creatively challenging. During this time, she remained a prominent figure in Hollywood social circles, but her acting career lay dormant until the late 1980s.

Lipton made a triumphant return to acting in 1988, taking on the role of Norma Jennings, the kind-hearted owner of the Double R Diner, in David Lynch’s surreal and critically acclaimed series Twin Peaks. Her portrayal of Norma, a woman navigating a troubled marriage and a burgeoning romance with diner customer Big Ed Hurley, earned her a new generation of fans and demonstrated her enduring talent. She reprised the role in the 1990 prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me and returned for the 2017 revival series Twin Peaks: The Return. In addition to her work on Twin Peaks, Lipton appeared in guest roles on shows such as The Wayans Bros. and Popular, and she published a memoir, "Breathing Out," in 2005, which candidly discussed her life, career, and marriage.

Peggy Lipton passed away on May 11, 2019 at the age of 72, after a battle with colon cancer. Her legacy as a trailblazing actress who bridged the gap between the counterculture of the 1960s and the surrealism of 1990s television remains secure. She is fondly remembered not only for her iconic roles but also for her grace, warmth, and the lasting impact she had on the entertainment industry, which continues through the work of her daughters, particularly actress and writer Rashida Jones.
