Otep was an American heavy metal band known for its aggressive, politically charged art-house nu metal sound and the commanding presence of its founder and sole constant member, frontwoman Otep Shamaya. Formed in Los Angeles in November 2000, the band quickly ascended from the local scene to national prominence, building a dedicated following through intense live performances and lyrics that tackled themes of oppression, empowerment, and social justice. Their identity was inextricably linked to Shamaya's vision, making Otep a powerful and distinctive voice in the metal landscape for over two decades.

The band's career launched at a remarkable pace after they were personally selected by Sharon Osbourne to perform at Ozzfest 2001. This high-profile exposure led to a major label deal with Capitol Records in March 2001, secured without the band even having a formal demo. Their debut album, Sevas Tra, arrived in 2002, followed by House of Secrets in 2004. Both records established Otep's signature blend of visceral metal, spoken word, and gothic atmosphere, selling a combined 400,000 copies worldwide. Their third album, The Ascension, faced significant delays due to corporate restructuring at Capitol, prompting the band to depart the label. The album was eventually released in October 2007 through Koch Records.

A new chapter began in February 2009 when Otep signed with Victory Records. That same year, they released the album Smash the Control Machine, which reunited the lineup from their debut and became one of their most notable works. This was followed by Atavist in 2011 and the ambitious concept album Hydra in 2013, which was initially intended to be the band's final statement. However, Shamaya chose to continue, leading Otep to Napalm Records for the albums Generation Doom (2016) and the politically pointed Kult 45 (2018). Their ninth and final studio album, The God Slayer, was released via Cleopatra Records on September 15, 2023. In November 2024, Otep Shamaya announced her retirement from music, effectively bringing the band Otep to an end after a influential 24-year run.
