Kaleo emerged from the Icelandic music scene to become an internationally recognized blues-rock band, best known for their haunting 2016 single "Way Down We Go," which achieved multi-platinum status and became a staple in film and television. Formed in Mosfellsbaer, Iceland, in 2012, the band's core lineup consisted of vocalist and guitarist JJ Julius Son, drummer David Antonsson, bassist Daniel Kristjansson, and guitarist Rubin Pollock. Their name, Kaleo, translates to "the sound" in Hawaiian, a fitting moniker for a group whose music would soon resonate across the globe.

The band's early years were spent honing their raw, soul-infused rock sound within Iceland's tight-knit music community. Their self-titled debut album, released in Iceland in 2013, quickly established them as a major domestic act, earning several Icelandic Music Awards including Song of the Year for "Vor í Vaglaskógi," a modern rock rendition of a classic Icelandic folk tune. This early success provided the foundation for their ambitious move to the United States in 2015, as they sought to introduce their distinctive sound to a wider audience.

Relocating to Austin, Texas, Kaleo signed with Atlantic Records and began work on their first international album. Their breakthrough arrived with the 2015 single "All the Pretty Girls," but it was the subsequent release "Way Down We Go" that catapulted them to international fame. The song's brooding atmosphere and powerful vocals led to massive streaming numbers and widespread licensing, featuring prominently in campaigns for Suicide Squad and shows like Orange Is the New Black and The Vampire Diaries. This success paved the way for their major-label debut, A/B, released in 2016. The album showcased their dynamic range, oscillating between gentle folk ballads like "Save Yourself" and blistering blues-rock anthems such as "No Good," and achieved Gold certification in the United States.

Kaleo's reputation as a formidable live act grew through extensive touring, including performances at major festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo, and supporting slots for artists like The Lumineers and Judas Priest. Their music continued to find a home in popular media, with tracks like "Hot Blood" featured in The Originals and "Break My Baby" appearing in Peaky Blinders. Following the prolonged touring cycle for A/B, the band entered a period focused on writing and recording. They returned in 2021 with the singles "Skinny" and "Alter Ego," offering a glimpse into their evolving musical direction. Kaleo continues to create and perform, maintaining their status as one of Iceland's most successful musical exports, celebrated for their authentic blend of blues, rock, and folk influences.
