INXS Biography

news-detailsINXS was an iconic Australian rock band that left an indelible mark on the music industry, particularly during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Formed in 1977 in Sydney, originally under the name The Farriss Brothers, the group consisted of members Garry Gary Beers, Andrew Farriss, Jon Farriss, Tim Farriss, Michael Hutchence, and Kirk Pengilly. Renowned for their energetic performances and innovative sound, INXS became a defining force within the rock genre, blending elements of new wave, pub rock, funk, and dance.

The band initially gained recognition in Australia with their first number-one hit, "Original Sin," in 1984. This success laid the groundwork for their breakthrough albums, including "Listen Like Thieves," "Kick," and "X." The 1987 album "Kick" was particularly pivotal, featuring some of their most memorable hits, such as "Need You Tonight," which became their only number-one single in the United States, as well as "Devil Inside," "New Sensation," and "Never Tear Us Apart." Their ability to craft catchy melodies and integrate diverse musical styles helped them achieve international acclaim, with "Kick" selling over six million copies in the U.S. alone.

Throughout their two-decade-long career with Hutchence as the charismatic frontman, INXS won numerous accolades, including six Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards, three of which were for "Best Group" in 1987, 1989, and 1992. The band was also inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2001, further solidifying their legacy as one of Australia's best-selling music acts, with over 50 million records sold worldwide.

The tragic death of Michael Hutchence on November 22, 1997, marked a significant turning point for INXS. Following his passing, the remaining members explored different avenues for the band's future, collaborating with various guest singers. In 2000, they began to tour and record with Jon Stevens as the lead singer. The year 2005 saw them participating in the reality television series Rock Star: INXS, which concluded with the selection of Canadian singer J.D. Fortune as Hutchence's successor. This collaboration produced the album "Switch," which was released in the same year.

In 2011, Irish singer-songwriter Ciaran Gribbin took over as lead vocalist. Despite their changes in lineup, INXS continued to perform and engage with their fan base. However, during a concert on November 11, 2012, the band announced that this performance would be their last, although they did not officially declare their retirement. The legacy of INXS endures, with their music continuing to resonate across generations, highlighting their profound influence on the rock genre and Australian music history.
