Formed in Baltimore in 2004, Beach House established themselves as one of the most defining and consistent acts in dream pop, crafting a signature sound of hazy, hypnotic elegance built around the core duo of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally. The pair met through the city's indie music scene, bonding over shared artistic sensibilities and a desire to create atmospheric, emotionally resonant music. Their work, characterized by Legrand's deep, velvety vocals and Scally's intricate guitar and keyboard textures layered over programmed rhythms, would evolve over nearly two decades while maintaining a distinct and recognizable aesthetic.

The band's self-titled debut album arrived in 2006 on Carpark Records, gaining initial traction after the song "Apple Orchard" was featured on a popular Pitchfork MP3 mixtape. This early attention set the stage for their second album, Devotion, in 2008, which further refined their melancholic and intimate sound. A significant breakthrough came with their 2010 move to Sub Pop Records and the release of Teen Dream. The album was met with widespread critical acclaim, praised for its expansive production and sharpened songwriting, marking a turning point where their music reached a broader audience without sacrificing its core identity.

Building on that momentum, Beach House released Bloom in 2012, which debuted at number 7 on the US Billboard 200, representing their highest chart position and confirming their commercial viability. In a surprising and prolific move, the duo released two full-length albums in 2015: Depression Cherry and Thank Your Lucky Stars, the latter described by the band as its own distinct statement rather than a companion piece. Their experimental spirit continued with 2018's aptly titled 7, which incorporated more live drumming and a slightly grittier sonic palette while remaining quintessentially Beach House.

Their most ambitious project to date, the double album Once Twice Melody, was released in chapters throughout 2022. The record saw the duo self-producing for the first time and incorporating a live string ensemble, showcasing a continued evolution within their established dream pop framework. Throughout their career, Beach House has maintained a steadfast creative partnership, rarely collaborating with outside producers or writers, which has resulted in a remarkably cohesive and influential body of work that continues to resonate with fans and critics alike.
