HBO Boss: 'True Detective' Season 2 Writing Is 'Exceptional'

HBO programming director Michael Lombardo has offered a scoop from "" season 2. At the Edinburgh TV Festival on Thursday, August 21, he gushed about how good the next installment would be compared to last season.

"When you have a success like 'True Detective' it's challenging, less for us and more for someone like Nic, how to face the page again and start afresh and not be haunted by the success of the show you've just done," he said. "But the writing is better than last season. It's exceptional."

Pizzolatto denied that he was directly lifting some of the dialogue on the hit show, particularly the philosophical reflections of 's Rust Cohle, from the works of various authors including horror novelist Thomas Ligotti.

"True Detective is a work of exceptional originality and the story, plot, characters and dialogue are that of Nic Pizzolatto. Philosophical concepts are free for anyone to use, including writers of fiction, and there have been many such examples in the past," HBO said in a statement. "Exploring and engaging with ideas and themes that philosophers and novelists have wrestled with over time is one of the show's many strengths - we stand by the show, its writing and Nic Pizzolatto entirely."

As scheduled, the first official trailer for HBO's upcoming series "" was unleashed on Sunday, September 8 before the season premiere of "". It centers on two detectives, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart played by and , whose lives collide and entwine during a 17-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana.

The story will jump back and forth between when the case first opened in 1995 and the present day when the two detectives are testifying in court after the case is re-opened in 2012. While the trailer mostly presents footage from the past, a scene towards the end of it shows an older Cohle who is seemingly interviewed related to the case.
