Carrie Wells and Al Burns are brought in to help with a Major Crimes kidnapping case by Eliot Delson, Special Deputy to the Mayor of New York City. Eliot briefs them on the case - a young girl named Lara Sonnenland was kidnapped by unknown assailants on her way to a local soccer game - and Carrie and Al get to work. They meet their new teammates, Jay, a detective and tech whiz, and Murray, a former FBI agent turned NYPD detective. Together, the team analyzes the evidence and discovers that the kidnappers M.O. fits two other kidnappings in the area that took place within the last three years. Jack Paulson, a hostage negotiator, was involved with one of the other cases and recognizes the kidnapper's voice from a recording, so Carrie and Al bring him on the case as well. They stage a sting in an attempt to nab the kidnappers and save Lara, but the kidnappers get a tip that the cops are involved and never show up. Carrie delves into her memory and pieces together clues that indicate Paulson was involved in the kidnapping plot. When they confront him, he admits to framing the kidnappers from the previous two cases and using a second group of hired thugs to kidnap Lara. Paulson wanted revenge after the kidnappers wrecked his career and killed a child. Carrie convinces him to right his wrong and help them get Lara back, but he's wounded in a shootout with the hired kidnappers and ultimately dies. Luckily, Carrie and Al arrive in time to save Lara and return her to her family..
