The CBI is called in to investigate the murder of a convict, Henry Dahl, who had served 9 years for rape and murder but was recently set free on DNA evidence. Jane believes the man to be guilty nonetheless, and is eventually proven right: The husband of Dahl’s victim, Max, had tampered with the DNA evidence so as to get him out of jail, allowing him to exact revenge. Max admits all this, but says when he found Dahl, he was already dead. Jane figures out the other side of this story - Sean Meyers, the husband of a woman who became involved with Dahl while he was in prison, was at the crime scene before Max. When Dahl threatened to kill his wife, Meyers attacked him. Ultimately, they don’t know which husband laid the fatal blow – Max or Meyers.
