Money From Audrey Hepburn Stamps Sale Goes to Charity

Taking as much as $606,000 at a charity auction, the 10 rare stamps benefit Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund and UNICEF Germany among others.

Audrey Hepburn's son has spoken of his delight after a rare set of stamps featuring the screen icon were sold for a staggering $606,000 at a charity auction. The 10 stamps show the legendary actress smiling coyly with a cigarette holder in her mouth, in character as Holly Golightly from the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's".

Sean Ferrer, Hepburn's son with actor and director Mel Ferrer, has pledged to hand over the money raised at the auction in Berlin, Germany on Saturday, October 16 to "children in need". Two-thirds of the sum will go to the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, and one-third to UNICEF Germany. Hepburn was an ambassador for UNICEF from 1988 until she died from colon cancer in 1993.

Ferrer tells the Associated Press, "I feel wonderful about the fact that something that belonged to her today can bring focus on children in need all over the world. My mother always told me, 'I didn't make a perfume or go sell toilet paper. I did something good with my name'."

Fourteen million of the stamps were printed in Germany in 2001, but almost all were destroyed when Ferrer refused to grant copyright.
