Usher: Talent Shows Kill the Music Industry

Just a few weeks after he appeared on 'American Idol', Usher said the industry is slowly dying because the true art form of music is being lost through reality shows.

R and B star Usher has accused TV talent shows of killing the music industry. Just weeks after the singer appeared as a mentor on the current season of "American Idol", Usher has blasted the show and its rivals for making talented singers celebrities and then casting them aside.

He says, "The true art form of music is being lost, because it seems so easy that everyone can do it, and that it can happen overnight. Television is a lie. It can't happen overnight. The artist who thinks that it can just comes and goes. The reason why great singers cannot exist in this time is maybe because they're not properly managed, and maybe they don't understand the full gamut of what being an entertainer is."

"We're dealing with an industry that is slowly but surely dying, every day. There's the record companies that are mass-producing these versions of these people; versions of this broken art. While it works, because it sells records, it damages the business."

Just my two cents here... the music industry has been dying for a while. Certainly since before reality television set in, and I'm not sure that reality TV isn't good for music in general. People are more interested in music then they were 15 years ago, probably because of American Idol and its competition. Generally speaking there are formulas that work for making money in the industry. Stakeholders are naturally hesitant to risk the production and promotion dollars required to make an album successful if they are not pretty likely to have a sure thing. As a result, records these days feel very mass-produced. Be honest... who is the last group to come along with anywhere NEAR the talent of BB King, The Eagles, Michael Jackson (before he got weird), Prince, Sinatra, Chicago, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Etc... The focus used to be on the music. At some point the focus shifted to the "product..." the whole package. The look, the image, the clothes, the fireworks and huge stadiums. The music has taken a back seat because producing and backing the whole package is a better business plan. The perfect example: Justin Beiber. Yes, sacrilege I know... you all LOVE him. I don't disagree. He is a loveable guy. Seems nice, down to earth, and certainly can sing. But he is getting promoted like a world class talent, and simply is NOT a world class talent. Listen carefully to any live performance and you'll find points during which he is clearly off key. Like I said, and good singer, but GREAT? No. A great PRODUCT... sure. Gues who is to blame? The consumer! That's right... you and I fail to seek out and spend our dollars on the best music that is offered, opting instead for whatever drivel we are buying these days. The industry is only reacting to the demand. If you want better music to be produced, buy better music.

Crazy Love by Michael Buble - I love every song on it and that's never happened to me before. Now, that's an artist.

Here's the real deal. Most of these kids are really talented. They sing beautifully and are not relying on artificial beats, repetitive basic chords patterns, and hypersexuality to "sell" their tunes. THey actually sing melodies that make sense...no staging or hype. They are not ruining the music industry in any shape or form, simply showing what real art can be. It's the rapper genre who try to pass as musicians who have brought down the standard of artistry to a new low. AI and such young talent shows have begun to bring MUSIC back.

He had to use the show to promote his album, yes he is a hypocrite. He's not stupid, he knows there are milliions watching. I won't buy his CD

the reason the music business is dying is because, main street artists put out crappy music! everyone is a sexual connoisseur, and is filthy rich. That's all their music is about! not to mention the lack of talent and synthesized music. I am sick of it. I am hard pressed to find an entire album that I will enjoy entirely. On any one album, there might be one or two good songs!

Usher is a hypocrite. No wonder he sucked so badly as a mentor on AI. Although he is right about these shows, if he had those feelings he shouldn't have gone in the first place. You could tell that he didn't care about mentoring them well. Maybe it is because he is envious.
