Artist of the Week: Sam Smith

Amid his struggle to cope with heartbreak, the singer turned to music and successfully made a grand comeback with his first single in almost two years, 'Too Good at Goodbyes'.

AceShowbiz - Sam Smith is a living proof that heartbreak is a blessing in disguise. He successfully took an inspiration from his failed romance on his music, turning it into stirring, emotional songs that touch many hearts. He's one of the very few artists to gain recognition with only one album. His debut effort, "In the Lonely Hour", was named the Best Vocal Album at the 2015 Grammy Awards.

He continued his success with "Writing's on the Wall", an anthemic song which served as the soundtrack of "Spectre". It was named Best Original Song at 73rd Golden Globe Awards, Brit Awards and Academy Awards back in 2015.

On the peak of his career, oddly, he decided to go on hiatus. He took his sweet time to cook up a proper sophomore album for nearly two years. After so much anticipation, the British singer released his comeback single in September 2017. Titled "Too Good at Goodbyes", the song is another heartfelt tune from Sam, inspired by his recent failed romance. The track is a massive success, topping several music charts in the U.K.

He recently shared that the heartbreak almost forced him to stop making music. "There was a period, when making the record, that I was in a really bad place," he said. "I got dumped, which wasn't very nice. Writing music about that kind of thing is normally like therapy for me, but when I got dumped this time 'round I just couldn't write for about two months."

"My team had to force me to get into the studio, because I almost felt as if I didn't want to do it anymore," he added. "So, there were moments on there where it got a bit intense an I started to lose myself." However, for Sam, making music is a part of the healing process. "It was so important when I was writing this record for me to just challenge myself and be scared again," he explained.

The follow-up to "In the Lonely Hour" is expected to arrive later this year. The upcoming album is said to feature collaborations with some biggest stars, including Timbaland, Clean Bandit and Adam Lambert.
