Chris Harrison on Bringing Chad Back for 'Bachelor in Paradise': We Wanted Him to 'Redeem Himself'

Chris Harrison says he wanted to give Chad Johnson a second chance, but 'he was really glib and really arrogant and really pissed me off,' so he kicked Chad off the show.

AceShowbiz - Chad Johnson's "Bachelor in Paradise" stint was short lived due to his rude behavior, which was not so surprising considering what he'd done on "The Bachelorette" season 12. For those wondering why the show's producers brought Chad back only to kick him off as soon at it started, host Chris Harrison has given an explanation.

Saying he believes in "second chances," Chris wanted Chad to "redeem himself," but it didn't happen. "We gave him enough rope to hand himself, but he did," Chris told reporters on the set of "Bachelor in Paradise" in Mexico in June. "This is why I'm not angry at him, I'm not mad at him, I don't dislike him at all. There is a reason he behaves the way he does."

He continued, "I would go so far as to say it comes from some sort of hurt insecurity...there is an issue there. After he goes to a certain length, you see him get very sad and very sorrowful and very apologetic, and you can tell he doesn't like that, he doesn't want to be that person. That's the guy I wanted to come back."

In the end, Chad threw the chance away with his drunken behavior on the show and Chris decided to kick him off in the season premiere. "I guess the ultimate decision to send him home was...I wasn't really scared for anybody, I don't think he was going to hurt anybody, although he threatens violence and says horrible things," said Chris. "He was taking away from everybody's chances to actually make this work. He was just a black cloud hanging over everything. He had really been verbally abusive to some of the staff, some of our crew and was rude to me."

When Chris called Chad the next morning after he was drunk, Chad didn't show remorse at all and it "pissed" Chris off. "It was a chance for him to be contrite...he was really glib and really arrogant and really pissed me off," Chris claimed. "He was a bit of a smartass...in the middle of it, I just made a decision, I'm like, 'You know what? I'm done. You're out.' Again, that's the beauty of the power I have here in Paradise. I see how you're making everybody feel, now you've pissed me off, I'm done. Get out of my house."

It surprised Chris because Chad had apologized when he arrived in Mexico. He recalled, "He came back to 'Paradise', the first thing he did was, 'Chris, I'm very sorry. I'm not that person. I'm back here to apologize to you, to the producers on my behavior, turning over a new leaf, I want this to work.' "

In a video posted on Twitter after the season opener aired, Chad apologized to Sarah Herron whom he called a "one-arm b***h." "I should've never ever EVER said that abt @sarahherron tonight. I was a dic k im disappointed in myself," he wrote in the caption. Sarah didn't seem to buy it as she responded, "If @realchadjohnson is really sorry, which I believe he is... he knows how to correct it with me personally. Doesn't need to be on a stage."

Chad then tweeted to her again, "@sarahherron I really am sorry. I'm more than happy to tell you that in person, whether you believe it or not." Sarah said she would accept his apology if he made a donation to SheLift.org.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Chad also said he didn't mean it when he made death threats. "The main thing - yeah, I said I was going to cut people's arms and legs off, but a smart person knows I'm not going to kill someone on camera. I have a job. I have things to do. I'm joking," he said.

The former luxury real estate agent realized he sometimes acted arrogantly, explaining, "But then you get to the parts where I'm like, None of these guys deserve this chick. I'm better than all of them. And I'm like, yeah, okay that makes me off like super arrogant. I get that."

He, however, claimed that some footage was "taken out of context." He said, "Some of those things were taken out of context and moved around from when I actually said them to when it was placed in the show."
