AceShowbiz - J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" continued to break box office records in the new year, grossing $90.2 million to nab the highest domestic third weekend ever. With the domestic total of $740.3 million, the sci-fi movie outpaced both "Titanic" ($658.7 million) and "Jurassic World" ($652.3 million) to become the second-highest grossing domestic movie ever.
"The Force Awakens" also became the fastest movie in history to hit $700 million, reaching the mark within 16 days. Globally, the film added another $184.6 million this weekend, bringing its worldwide total to a staggering $1.51 billion. On Saturday, it surpassed "Avengers: Age of Ultron" ($1.41 billion) to occupy the No. 6 spot on the list of all-time highest grossing films.
Coming after "The Force Awakens" this weekend was Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell's "Daddy's Home". The comedy movie took the second spot, earning $29.2 million from 3,342 theaters in its second weekend for a domestic total of $93.7 million.
Taking the third position in the chart was Quentin Tarantino's "The Hateful Eight". The western movie garnered $15.7 million from 2,474 locations for a domestic total of $29 million.
Rounding out the top five were comedies "Sisters" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip". Starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, "Sisters" grossed $12.8 million in its third weekend for a domestic total of $61.7 million. As for the Chipmunks movie, it added another $12.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $67.6 million.
