To be called 'Independence Day: Resurgence', the film follows the nations of Earth which have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet from aliens' attack.

AceShowbiz - Director Roland Emmerich revealed that the follow-up to 1996's "Independence Day" would be titled "Independence Day: Resurgence". Emmerich also revealed details about the film including the plot details and the movie's characters in a live stream alongside the new cast members such as Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward. The returning actors such as Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner and Judd Hirsch also joined the director in the live stream.
Emmerich hinted that the sequel would take place 20 years after the alien attack in the first film. The official synopsis reads, " 'Independence Day' was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the 'Independence Day' universe delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."
In the original film, Pullman was the U.S. president. However, in the sequel, it is Ward who plays the new U.S. president. "Thanks to forward-thinking, non-sexist, socially responsible Roland Emmerich!" Ward said. Ward's character works with the daughter of Pullman's character played by Monroe. "I work with Sela at the White House and have to live up to my dad. He was huge and I want to make him proud and I'm also a fighter pilot. I'm kind of a badass, I think," Monroe said.
Hemsworth also described his character, Jake, saying that Jake was an orphan after he lost his parents in the first attack. Hemswoth continued explaining that Jake joined the military and became a fighter pilot who got a great job of driving moon tug, which Hemswoth dubbed "a forklift on the moon."
Meanwhile, Usher plays Dylan Hiller, son and legacy of Will Smith's character, Steven Hiller, from the original. "He grew up in the world that his Dad saved... It's a lot of pressure," Usher said of his character. As for his character's mother, she is played by Fox, who played Smith's love interest in the first film.
The long-awaited movie is set for a release on June 24, 2016 in the United States.
