An entirely new script based on the first novel 'The Gunslinger' is written for the long-delayed movie which will be co-produced by Ron Howard.

AceShowbiz - The feature film adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" finally finds home at Sony. The long-gestating project has been in development hell since it was first announced in 2007. It was previously passed on by Universal and then Warner Bros. due to budget issues.
Deadline reports that Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner write a completely new script for the upcoming movie. Primarily based on the first volume in the novel series, "The Gunslinger", it will be entirely different from the previous draft developed for Universal and Warner Brothers.
The story centers on Roland Deschain who travels across a desolate and vaguely post-apocalyptic landscape in his quest for a black tower. Ron Howard ("Frost/Nixon", "Rush") was previously attached to direct the pic, but it seems that he will now be involved as a producer.
Javier Bardem and Russell Crowe were once tipped to lead the film. Last year, Aaron Paul revealed he had "a general sit down with Ron Howard." He spilled, "Their goal is to do three films, but also have a television element to it, which will be very interesting. From what I hear, Eddie Dean is a pretty epic, iconic character."
Despite the long delay, the TV series is reportedly still a go.
