AceShowbiz - Billie Joe Armstrong is bringing a new musical to the Atlantic Theater Company. "These Paper Bullets!" adapted by Rolin Jones ("Boardwalk Empire) with original songs by the Green Day rocker is set to play at the off-Broadway venue co-founded by David Mamet and William H. Macy.
Described as "mod-ish ripoff of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing with a serious backbeat," the production premiered at Yale Repertory Theatre last year. It will play at the Geffen Playhouse from September 8 to October 18 before heading to New York for a November-December run.
The show centers on a Liverpool rock band trying to make a name in the '60s London music scene. It's lined up for the Atlantic 30th-anniversary season along with Harold Prince's "The Band's Visit", Dominique Morisseau's "Skeleton Crew", and Adam Rapp's "Purple Lights of Joppa Illinois".
Armstrong tried out Broadway with "American Idiot" which was based on his band's 2004 hit album of the same name. It started playing at the Great White Way in 2010 after opening at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. The original album won a Grammy Award and so did the Broadway cast's recordings.
