Video: Diane Sawyer Says Goodbye to ABC's 'World News' After Five Years

The ABC News anchor says she moves 'down the hall and up the stairs' to lead new programming and David Muir will replace her starting next week.

Diane Sawyer officially stepped down from ABC's "World News Tonight" on Wednesday, August 27. At the end of the news broadcast, she said her goodbye, "And now it is time to say goodnight. I just want you to know what a deep privilege it has been to sit in the anchor chair at World News these years, the flagship broadcast of ABC, where Peter Jennings created a signature of such curiosity and courage."

"It has been wonderful to be the home port for the brave and brilliant forces of ABC News around the world and to feel every single night that you and I were in a conversation about the day together," she continued, adding that David Muir would take over the anchor chair starting next Tuesday.

Sawyer reminded viewers that she's "not going far, down the hall and up the stairs," and she's "not slowing down, but gearing up in a new way." She is set to lead new programming that will tackle "big issues and extraordinary interviews."

Sawyer joined "World News" in December 2009, replacing Charles Gibson with whom she previously worked together as a co-anchor on "Good Morning America".
