'Wilfred' Renewed for Fourth and Final Season, Moving to FXX

The comedy series starring Elijah Wood and Jason Gann will return for its last 10-episode run on FX's sister channel.

"Wilfred" will end after four seasons. The Elijah Wood and Jason Gann starrer has been renewed for a fourth and final season that will consist of 10, less than its usual 13-episode order. The show, which debuted on FX in 2011, will also move to FXX for its final run.

Series creator and original showrunner David Zuckerman will return to the day-to-day post alongside season 3 showrunners Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne. The fourth season is slated to air in 2014, but no exact premiere date is announced yet.

The news comes after "Wilfred" dropped significantly in ratings, with the third season averaging 580,000 total viewers. That's only half of the audience who watched the second season, which averaged 1.16 million total viewers.

Words are, FX chief John Landgraf informed the "Wilfred" crew of the final season order well ahead of time so that they would get the chance to tie up loose ends on the series. The move, instead of the typical cancellation, after ratings assessment allows writers to give a proper closure to the characters' storyline and resolve some cliffhangers or plot points.
