Could Channing Tatum make his directorial debut anytime soon? According to recent report, the "21 Jump Street" actor has become a potential candidate to tackle the helming duty in the follow-up to his recent hit stripper movie "Magic Mike".

Tatum reportedly told German site Filmstarts that he might direct "Magic Mike 2" since Steven Soderbergh planned to take a hiatus from filmmaking. The husband of Jenna Dewan said that he could helm the film, possibly with scribe and producing partner Reid Carolin.

"We really want to, but Steven Soderbergh really want to retire," so he said, as translated by AlloCine, when asked if there would be a sequel to the male stripper film. "We will undoubtedly make the Broadway version first [...]. Gregory Jacobs [assistant director Soderbergh] can make the film, or well we can achieve, Reid Carolin and me, but we do not know."

Weighing in on the sequel project, Carolin gushed that it might be some kind of a road movie. "You know, we are talking a lot about it. We have a story, and it is really ridiculous and fun," so the screenwriter said, as quoted by The Playlist. "It's a road movie sort of thing, where bunch of strippers get back together. It's more of a broad comedy. I don't know whether it will happen or not."

Made with a budget of merely $7 million, "Magic Mike" successfully collects $154.4 million worldwide. In addition to Tatum, the R-rated dramedy stars Alex Pettyfer, Cody Horn, Olivia Munn, Matthew McConaughey, Matthew Bomer and Riley Keough.

Tatum himself will next be seen returning as Duke Hauser in "G.I. Joe: Retaliation". He is also set to star in Soderbergh's new film "The Bitter Pill", as well as lend his voice to Superman in "Lego: The Piece of Resistance". His other big screen projects include Roland Emmerich's "White House Down" and the Wachowskis' "Jupiter Ascending".
