When the number of contestants had been narrowed down, the girls had to face a new rival in this week's "The Bachelor". Ben Flajnik, meanwhile, improved a bit in the elimination when he decided not to hand out the final rose that night.
Continuing his date with the remaining 16 girls in San Francisco, Ben took Emily for a one-on-one date to climb the Golden Gate Bridge earlier in the January 16 episode. Emily admitted she was horrified, but managed to overcome her fear. She got a rose and a kiss from Ben as the reward.
For the group date, Ben took 11 women to ski in fake snow in their bikinis. At cocktail party, the girls tried to steal the bachelor's attention, but it was Rachel who finally got the rose.
Meanwhile at the hotel, a date card arrived for Brittney but she felt that her heart did not belong in the competition. She packed her bag and met Ben, telling him that she didn't want him to waste a one-on-one date with her.
Ben then chose Lindzi to replace Brittney for the second one-on-one date. They had a trolley car tour around San Francisco before having a dinner at Bourbon & Branch. Lindzi shared her story of how she was dumped by a guy she once loved, leaving "a lasting impression" on Ben, who decided to give her a rose.
At the final cocktail party, Shawntel Newton from the previous "Bachelor" season with Brad Womack surprised Ben and the girls with her unexpected arrival. She explained that she came because she wanted to date Ben after seeing him being rejected by Ashley Hebert. She asked him to give her a rose at the rose ceremony, but Ben only said, "I don't know what to say to you right now."
Courtney was pissed as she branded the situation for being "unfair". She even threatened to leave if Ben allowed Shawntel to stay. Echoing Courtney, Rachel said, "It's incredibly unfair," while Nicki started crying and wondered, "What makes her better than the people that have already gone home?"
At the rose ceremony, Ben gave the rose to Courtney, Kacie B., Elyse, Jamie, Jennifer, Casey S., Blakeley, Monica, Nicki and Samantha. Before Ben handed out the final rose, Erika collapsed to the ground. She blamed Shawntel for it.
Finally, Ben explained to the girls that he would not give the final rose and decided to eliminate Erika, Jaclyn and Shawntel. While Shawntel quickly left the place, Erika and Jaclyn had their moment of meltdown caught on camera.
