More than twenty years after it was brought to the big screen, "Steel Magnolias" is going to get a remake treatment. Lifetime is currently adapting the script of the 1989 feature film into a TV movie with a contemporary take and an all-black cast.

The original "Steel Magnolias" film itself was based on a play of the same name by Robert Harling. It featured Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts in the cast ensemble, and the new project is aimed to "assemble a similarly high-wattage cast of black actresses."

Lifetime's "Steel Magnolias" will be directed by Kenny Leon, with the script written by Sally Robinson. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron serve as producers, but the project has not been greenlit. However, the film is said to be on fast track while some preliminary work on casting choices for the leads is expected to begin soon.

Like the original movie, the upcoming remake will be set in Louisiana and will explore the bond among a group of women, who can be as delicate as magnolias but are as tough as steel, in the present day.
