Controversy surrounding the use of religious symbolism in Lady GaGa's "Alejandro" music video is addressed by Steven Klein, the man who directs the "homoerotic military" clip. The photographer says the symbol is "not meant to denote anything negative."

Parts of the music video which sparked controversy are a bed scene which features a crucifix and the one which has GaGa sucking rosary beads. "Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke," Katy Perry wrote on Twitter without mentioning the clip.

But, Steven is adamant that the video is not meant to offend anyone. In a further statement to MTV, he insisted it "represents the character's battle between the dark forces of this world and the spiritual salvation of the Soul."

The director added, "Thus at the end of the film, she chooses to be a nun, and the reason her mouth and eyes disappear is because she is withdrawing her senses from the world of evil and going inward towards prayer and contemplation."
