'Silent Hill 2' Writer Jailed for Fatal Crash

Roger Avary

It is unclear yet how the sentencing of Roger Avary to a year behind bar, stemming from a drunk-driving accident in 2008, will affect the production of the 'Silent Hill' sequel.

"Silent Hill 2" may have been faced with its first obstacle before even going into production. On Tuesday, September 29, the newly-appointed screenwriter for the sequel, Roger Avary, has been sentenced to a year in jail and five years of probation for a drunk-driving accident that took the life of a passenger in Southern California.

The Academy Award-winning scribe was involved in the fatal accident in 2008 when his Mercedes which is said traveling at more than 100 mph crashed into a telephone pole. After initially pleading innocent last December, he pleaded guilty in August 2009 to gross vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving.

Weeks earlier, Avary has been announced to make a return to his writing position for a sequel to 2006's horror thriller "Silent Hill". It is yet clear what effect does his sentencing bring to the project or whether the production is going to stick with the man behind the script of Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction".

The original "Silent Hill" centers on a young mother desperate to find a cure for her only child's illness. Ignoring the protests of her husband, she travels to an abandoned town in search of answers and finds supernatural occurrences taking place there. The sequel is expected to begin shooting in 2010 after "Resident Evil: Afterlife", which is currently preparing to film, and has Samuel Hadida producing.
