Avril Lavigne Freed From Copyright Blame

Avril Lavigne
Avril Lavigne is no longer accused of copying The Rubinoos song after the band released a statement that exonerated her.

After earlier this month cleared from the copyright issue regarding her hit single 'Girlfriend', Avril Lavigne received an exoneration statement. The Rubinoos have cleared Lavigne and the song's co-writer Dr. Luke from the accusation.

Lavigne was sued for plagiarism in July 2007 when Tommy Dunbar and James Gangwer aka. The Rubinoos claimed 'Girlfriend' sounds too much like their 1979 single 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend'. Her songwriting partner Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald was also named in the lawsuit. However, the case was settled between the two parties on January 10, although the details are not yet disclosed.

In the latest statement read by Lavigne's label, Nettwerk, The Rubinoos said, "We are satisfied that any similarities between the two songs resulted from Avril and Luke's use of certain common and widely used lyrics. We therefore completely exonerate Avril and Luke from any wrongdoing of any kind in connection with the claims made by us in our lawsuit."

'Girlfriend' was the first single from Lavigne's third studio album, 'The Best Damn Thing'. Its lyrics in the chorus which is "Hey hey you you, I want to be your girlfriend" claimed too similar to the lyrics of Rubinoos' song which is "Hey hey you you, I wanna be your boyfriend".
