Black Book Helmer Handling The Topkapi Affair

A directing name has finally been hired to take care of "The Topkapi Affair." Variety has given confirmation that the assigned person is none other than Paul Verhoeven, who recently drew praise for his 2006 thriller war flick "Black Book."

Verhoeven's inclusion thereby gives signal that MGM as the studio behind the sequel to 1999's "The Thomas Crown Affair" has committed to a big-budget picture instead. Production is reportedly due to start in January using locations in Europe.

Since Rene Russo has been confirmed to not reprise her part as Catherine Banning in "The Topkapi Affair", it is not surprising to hear a new female lead is already been found for the flick. What makes it so sensational is the name assigned for the role, which turns out to be none other than Angelina Jolie.

Yes, that's likely to be her according to Moviehole.net, as it claimed that the Oscar-winning actress has "finally reached a deal to play Pierce Brosnan’s leading lady in the movie." While did not say anything about the character she is set to portray, the site, however, openly revealed that the project is based on Eric Ambler's "The Light of Day" which Peter Ustinov adapted for his 1964 heist movie "Topkapi" and "will please fans of the first movie but also newcomers to the series."

It's been quite a long time since Pierce Brosnan has been confirmed to be the male lead in "The Topkapi Affair" yet until now there is no sign on the female star to accompany him. Regarding this matter, Moviehole has surprisingly thrown out words saying an offer has gone to Angelina Jolie to take in the part.

With Rene Russo not returning for the project, the site seems rather confident that it is "going to hit the trades any second now" despite Jolie's recent statement on her intention to take a year off from acting to spend time with her family after filming "The Changeling" for Universal Pictures.

Those who wait for the certainty of the existence of the sequel to 1999's "The Thomas Crown Affair" should take a breath of relief by now as Pierce Brosnan has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the project is ready to move on.

"Thomas Crown 2, for all intents and purposes, will happen," the actor stated. "The script came in two days ago and it's good. We've announced it, we've said to the world that we're going to do it -- come hell or high water, we're going to do it."
