'The Smurfs' Out of 2010 Slate
September 14, 2009 01:09:44The U.S. theatrical release of "The Smurfs" is facing a delay. Two weeks shy of Disney's revelation that "Tron Legacy" will be released on the same date as the planned release for "Smurfs", Sony Pictures came out with a new date, placing the CG-animation out of the studio's 2010 slate, as reported by Coming Soon.
Pulling out "Smurfs" from the crowded December 17, 2010 schedule, Sony pushed back the movie for about seven months to the July 29, 2011 release. With the new date given, this 3-D movie will be available in theaters a week after Marvel Studios releases "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011.

First Look at a CGI Smurf from 'The Smurfs'
September 01, 2009 02:09:14Columbia Pictures is developing a CG-adaptation of "The Smurfs", and has released a promo image of the upcoming movie in a magazine. Scanned and posted online by PVCBlue, the first look gives a taste of how the blue-colored character will look like in the feature film, along with a reminder that the movie will come out in theaters holiday 2010.
Little is known about the storyline of this family animation film. Such characters as Papa Smurf, Smurfette and the villainous Gargamel are expected to appear in it. David Stem and David Weiss, the writers of "Shrek 2" and "Shrek the Third", will provide the script alongside scribe Audrey Wells.

'The Smurfs' Coming Out in 3-D
June 29, 2009 04:06:43There will be a 3-D "The Smurfs" movie by December 17, 2010. According to Coming Soon, Columbia Pictures will not only develop the movie which is based on the characters created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, as a CG/live-action hybrid film, but also will deliver it in 3-D.
Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation will team up to bring the flick to the big screen. The collaboration is made possible after the former studio have agreed to co-finance the film which rights have been obtained by the latter production company through producer Jordan Kerner who has secured the rights in 2002. The studios have tapped David Stem and David Weiss, the writers of "Shrek 2" and "Shrek the Third", to pen the script.

Years passed by and the particular project seems to be going out of the movie industry's radar. But, it doesn't mean that the adaptation movie is canceled since what happens suggested otherwise.

November 28, 2006 10:11:00More tidbits have been revealed on "The Smurfs" as producer Jordan Kerner eagerly sat down and shared some info about the upcoming project with Moviehole.net.
Claiming he has been researching the Hanna-Barbera's popular 80s cartoon extensively, Kerner confirmed that the flick is planned to be a trilogy which can fill in all the "holes" of the TV series, making clear the unexplained things happened in the episodes.
